Well, that was a most humane response from a homeowner facing an attack from a mutant biker zombie. It is unfortunate that the defender will have to endure the emotional turmoil that the attacker created, but I hope he will eventually understand that he is just a victim and he was just giving the attacker what he demanded -- death.

Hmmmm... Vietnam Vet? Obvious PTSD from long ago. I remember one of our high school teachers had the same thing happen. He started crying in the middle of our class. Everyone was like, ummmmm WTF? Then the guy started yelling and pulled out a pack of cigs from his desk and started smoking in the middle of class. As he was puffing away he screamed and jumped inside a trash can and just crouched there shaking.
Principal came up and asked the students to leave. Cops came and the teacher was gone. Forced retirement I guess. |
Re: Full 911 call from deadly self-defense shooting
That was very disturbing and sad all around: Bewildered and afraid homeowner does what he has to do I guess and yet a human (possibly a father who served his country) with a mental disorder gets his chest blasted twice and suffers a probable last few minutes of life wondering what happened. Legally justified of course, but had it been me, and there were no children upstairs sleeping, I think I would have simply taken myself and the wife out the front door while armed and let the police do the shooting if necessary. I say that only because there was easily sufficient time here to establish the guy rambling about Vietnam was likely mentally ill or off medication.
This may be unpopular here, but in my time I have witnessed numerous instances of mental illness resulting in totally alarming behavior. My own mother developed Alzheimer's, and before going into a care facility, would regularly wander over to neighboring houses and get confused as to why the back door would not open and then get very angry - quite scary times for us. She thought she was home and that somebody else was in her house. It can happen and in this instance with the guy ranting about Vietnam mental illness would be my very first thought. I'd wield the chambered, safety off shotgun for sure, but probably give a modicum of doubt until I saw a weapon or had no possible way to escape. The homeowner here should not be charged of course, but obviously the assailant was a nut job and let him smash a door or window while I go out front to wait for the approaching police. You can hear the sirens a block or two away. All I'm saying is that if you can reasonably ascertain some older person by their actions is suffering mental illness and is likely unarmed think of a way to diffuse the situation without killing the unfortunate chap. Just something to think about if you've never been around these types before. I live near a park and encounter people like this from time to time. |

When someone is at your back patio door, trying to kick it in and possibly using a wrought iron patio chair to smash the patio glass, it's hard to keep a level head where you can weigh the options you presented. I dont fault the homeowner 100%. He was heard in the tape telling the victim that he has a gun but the guy kept coming. It's would be nice to think that one's head would be clear enough to think of the options available, but the husband was dealing with an angry beligerent drunk on one side, and a hysterical screaming wife on the other end. So asking him to tuck tail and run to let the cops take care of it really isnt fair in my opinion. Waiting for the police to arrive could be a fatal mistake, even if they were only a couple of blocks away. Although it's unfortunate that someone who needed help died, I give kudos to the homeowner for exercising his 2nd amendment right to protect himself and his home. I would do the exact same thing in that situation. |

Hmmmm... besides the point but did anyone catch the odd thing about this call?
Guy was 35. Vietnam ended 35 years ago. This guy couldn't have been there. |
